What’s the difference between monaural and binaural headset

There are two different types of headsets you may face when choosing one: monaural and binaural. Even at a first glance, they seem to be pretty the same, take a closer look and consider what type of headset you really need. From my personal experience, I can say that the right type of headset may save you from a lot of stress. So I think it«s worth consideration before you buy one of two types.

First of all, you should choose a headset that will serve your needs, that«s the first thing you start with. Usually, headsets are the best choice for people that are doing a lot of communications within a day, so they have no need to use the microphone as a separate device.

However, consider some additional points as well. For example, whether you need to hear surrounding sound or no.

What«s better headset or headphones?

First, you need to understand what suits you better — headphones or headset. To quickly understand the difference — headphones are speakers only, so they don«t have a microphone to record input audio; headsets have both microphone and speaker/speakers, so you can record audio and listen to it as well.

Although the choice may not be obvious, the best way out is simply to look at your needs. If you just want to listen to music, there is no reason to buy a headset. But if you want to communicate when you«re playing games, working, or whatever, then a headset would be a great choice because it has a built-in microphone.

What is a monaural headset?

The monaural headset has only one speaker, so it«s made for one-ear using. Obviously, it doesn«t provide enough sound-canceling (at least because your one ear isn«t hidden into the speaker). At first glance it may seem to be a bad type of headset, however, it isn«t so.

Just an example — it may be useful in cases when you need to hear what«s going on around you, for example, to accept calls and communicate with your co-workers in the office.

Another advantage — such headsets are usually quite light-weighting, so your head wouldn«t get tired if you«re wearing such headsets for a lot of time (or at least it would be much less tired than with a binaural headset).

So, in case you want to hear the surrounding sound, a monaural headset is a better choice.

What is a binaural headset?

Binaural headset, on the other hand, has both speakers and is designed for both-ear use. It would be a much better choice if you want to concentrate on what«s going on in your speakers, not around you. For example, if your work is connected with talks with important clients or in case you«re looking for a headset for gaming.

Vladimir Sereda in his article for Splaitor writes that he talked to three people that are involved in works with a lot of communication and all of them told that binaural headsets are better. That makes sense, as it allows you to concentrate on the conversation, without distracting with surrounding sounds.

What headset you should choose — monaural or binaural?

Well, that hardly depends on your needs. If you need to hear surrounding sounds — a monaural headset would be better. However, in case you want to concentrate on communicating with a person on another side of your conversation — a binaural headset looks like a better choice.

So it«s all up to your needs, so consider them first in order to make the right decision.
